The story behind “Embrace the Night” night walks in Oak Bay
Oak Bay is a very walkable community and many Oak Bay citizens take advantage of the closeness their homes are to all the amenities and small businesses which are well situated and many within reach without driving.
If you are one of those who also walk at night, you realize how few Oak Bayers are out there with you, particularly on foot. A few of us night walkers realized how lonely it is outside on the street. We will look over at the houses we walk past and more often than not observe the all too familiar blue glow through windows and curtains. Of course that glow is from some electronic device be it TV or Computer seductively occupying so much of a family’s time. It’s hard not to be seduced with such a limitless number of shows and games to choose from. Then, for most of us, there’s the dependence on our devices for the extended work day, as the main choice of communication with family, friends (and friends we “Friend”) and lastly, just the quest for information and knowledge in this electronic dependant fast paced world of ours.
So, we, the some so few night walkers, started talking about how best to encourage others to share the benefits of our experience and how great it feels to be out walking after the main meal of the day and before bed in such a safe and walk friendly community. The results?….
Embrace the Night
in Oak Bay.
If, through the results of the first walk, “Embrace the Night” becomes a monthly event, we will be trying to spread the wealth and joy to our neighbourhoods and have meeting sites that allow most of us to reach without our cars and have different themes and destinations. Those decisions will be based on feedback from you. So, after your walk and you become more inspired and you’ve cleared your head of all worries, we need to hear from you through the CAOB link.
We are so excited to have you consider this 4th instalment of “Embrace the Night”.
Please share this with friends and then join us Monday, May 12, 2014 at 7:30 pm in the Cattle Point parking lot down the entrance road opposite the Uplands park Beach Drive sign and just south and across the street from the Oak Bay Cenotaph.

Night Walk results..FANTASTIC
On behalf of CAOB, A big THANK YOU for joining Monday nights walk where you were treated to the spectacular show of moon, waterfront and seas of blue camas, yellow buttercup, maroon chocolate lilies, part of the diverse rugged beauty of Uplands Park.
What an amazing turnout on such short notice. 29 counted. none lost….for long.
Special thanks
to Margaret Lidkea and Kathleen Matthews, co-founders of Friends of Uplands Park for sharing their knowledge of the park and all that’s in all made possible by the hard work of seas of volunteers whose efforts are supported by Chris Hyde-Lay, Parks Manager and the Oak Bay Parks and Recreation Department, the Parks and Rec Commission and ultimately, the Oak Bay Municipal Council.
Special thanks also to Susan and Gordon of Kiwanis for opening up just for us. The well deserved sit down over a tea and a baked treat was a nice finish to the walk.
Of course a big thank you and Embrace to CAOB as the sponsor and
Last but not least, our casual but fit committee; Jill and Tom Croft, Rick Marshall and Lara Lauzon
