Shifting Priorities?
At the very successful Active Transportation Forum held in Oak Bay Nov. 7th, Councilor Nils Jensen suggested that Oak Bay Council incorporate a new filter through which to plan and prioritize road/infrastructure projects.
Councilor Jensen is following through on this initiative by tabling a motion to Oak Bay Council tomorrow (Monday) night. The motion would resolve that Oak Bay, when planning transportation upgrades, give preference to modes of transportation in the following order: Pedestrian, Cycling, Public Transit, Motor Vehicles. Also, that staff would prepare options to achieve this in budget year 2010.

While I appreciate and understand what Councillor Jensen was trying to do, the examples cited were based on a region where the population density is 10x greater than our region. This in effect creates a larger tax base to draw upon,a smaller more dense area also means access to shopping, etc is easier compared to our area. Further The area he discussed has less government compared to our balkanised region. He’s right, we could learn a thing or 2 from them, ;lets start by reducing the 14 municipalities and an unelected CRD to 3. Impose term limits on elected officials so we can get away from the nanny state that we have become.
