The legalization of secondary suites, setting up a farmer’s market, bike lanes, café patios, and the protection of the urban tree canopy are just some of the issues that can spark up a good, heated debate in our neighbourhood. The Oak Bay Community Association wants to encourage participation in Community Planning, and facilitate the transfer of information on these issues.

Gerald Smeltzer has taken on the role of Director of Community Planning. He has already taken the initiative to meet with the Bicycle Master Plan group, and will be a great representative for the Community Association at various planning meetings.

We are not an issue-driven group, but we would like to see more proactive discussion of the community plan, before the Mayor and Council have to make any decisions with only the feedback they receive through traditional methods. They are making great strides at reaching out to the Community for their opinions, but there’s always room for more. The Community Association hopes to assist in gathering feedback, and help make Oak Bay’s democratic process more accessible and inclusive, by hosting forums, and creating more opportunities to participate in the community planning process.

If you’ve got something to say about any of these issues, please feel free to begin a post on our forum. If you aren’t able to attend the meetings, perhaps this is the place for you to share your take on the issues, and get discussion going!
